Lady Badgers 'believe' to consolation trophy at state

| February 22, 2013 8:00 AM

The Lady Badgers used their “Believe” shooting shirts to win the district championship. Then they proved their new shirts: “Still Believing. We’re not done yet” were true when they earned a win in the consolation (fourth place) game at the 3A girls’ State Basketball Tournament at Skyview High School in Nampa.

Feb. 14: Bonners Ferry 40 Parma 41

The Badgers came out with a 10-6 first quarter lead and healed that lead into the half. Parma outscored the Badgers 5-13 in the third quarter. The Badgers fought back in the fourth quarter and had a one point lead with 20 seconds left.

After a Badger turnover and a Parma lay in with four seconds left, the Badgers failed to get a shot off and lost a heartbreaker in the first game of the state tournament.

The Badgers were led by Desi Minor in her best performance of the season, with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Feb. 15: Bonners Ferry 45 Priest River 35

The Badgers recovered quickly from their previous heartbreak loss and beat league rival Priest River 45-35 in overtime. A quick seven points in the first 1:30 of overtime, led by Savannah Woods and Abby Skeen, put the pressure on the Spartans.

The Badgers iced the overtime victory shooting 10 of 11 from the free-throw line.

Savannah Woods scored 10 of her game leading 13 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. Woods also added eight rebounds. Abby Skeen added nine points, five coming from the free throw line in overtime. Skeen also had five rebounds and four assists.

February 16: Bonners Ferry 48 Marsh Valley 34

The Lady Badgers defeated defending state champion Marsh Valley Eagles 48-34 in their final contest of the season. The Badgers used a 20 to 1 run at the end of the second and beginning of the third quarters to secure their lead.

Kendra Merritt, Savannah Woods and McKenzie MacDonald all scored in double digits to lead a balanced attack.

MacDonald scored 11 points, included three of three from behind the three point line and added five rebounds. She was seven of eight from behind the three point line in the tournament.

Savannah Woods once again added 13 points to go along with her eight rebounds and three assists. Kendra Merritt in a breakout scoring game had 12 points and five rebounds. Merritt also contributed with her interior defense and four steals.
