The Badgers won a double overtime thriller over Kellogg on Saturday night, 49-46.

Bonners stormed out of the gate, scoring the first four points and forcing Kellogg to call a quick time-out. The Badgers’ shooting went cold for the rest of the quarter, but their defense held steady all night.

After a tough first half, Bonners went into the locker room down 17-13. Staying consistent with previous games, the Badgers dominated the third quarter, outscoring Kellogg 17-5 with 13 points combined by Cameron Woods and Ryan Farrens.

The Badgers’ eight-point fourth quarter lead started to fade though after Farrens fouled out with about three minutes remaining. Also, the Badgers only made 3 of 8 free throws in the quarter.

The Badgers had a chance to win the game on the last play, which was well executed.

With only four seconds left, Skeen inbounded the ball to Cameron Woods at half court. Woods drove the left lane, drew the defense over and dished the ball to Evan Moe under the basket on the right side.

Moe was fouled on his attempt, but the officials waved off the foul after a conference, determining that time expired before the foul.

In the first overtime, the Badgers stormed out to a six-point lead, but Kellogg managed to climb back into the game after a couple of key Badger turnovers and a timely three by Jesse Lambert.

Again, Bonners had a chance to win at the end, but Woods’s runner rimmed out as the buzzer sounded.

Like in the first overtime, the Badgers built an early lead in the second, but this time, they managed to hold on to it.

Bonners went four for six from the free-throw line in the second overtime, including two from Cameron Fitch, who came off the bench after Josh Pluid fouled out. On Kellogg’s last possession, Garrett Skeen managed to pick off an errant pass and preserved the three-point win for the Badgers.

I was pleased with our defensive effort throughout the game. Kellogg is a talented offensive team, and our team made them struggle all night.

We executed our half-court trap effectively and forced 20 Kellogg turnovers. Individually, Garrett Skeen made it a tough night for Kellogg’s leading scorer, Garrett Wendt, and Josh Pluid drew two charges and kept Logan Sauer, who tallied 16 points against us in our first meeting, scoreless.

Above all, we showed resiliency as a team despite some crucial mistakes, and our bench — led by Price, Evans, and Fitch — helped seal the game for us in the end by hitting clutch shots and playing stout defense.

Unfortunately, Cameron Woods, who led the Badgers with 13 points, sprained his ankle in the last 10 seconds and may miss the next few games.
