Lysne, Hubbard scholarship recipients at Kootenai River Run
Following a week of rainy weather, Kootenai River Run organizers and participants were pleased to see ideal running conditions on the morning of June 22. Two-hundred and ten people finished the race, with 38 completing the 10K course and 172 finishing the 5K.
The majority of entrants were local runners. However, runners came from as far away as New Jersey, Maryland and Nashville. Former Boundary County residents Brian and Roberta Zimmerman traveled from southern Idaho.
The winner of the female 10K division was Katie Cox of Sandpoint, with a time of 42:29. Former Bonners Ferry High School runner Jesse “JRG” Gondek was the overall male 10K winner with a time of 41:04. Jesse was also the lucky winner of a $100 gift certificate for a new pair of running shoes or other running attire.
In the 5K event, Anna Cummins of Coeur d’Alene was the overall winner in the female division with a time of 21:22. Local high school runner Luke Reoch won the male division with an 18:19 time.
Proceeds from the run provide two $1,000 scholarships to two current year’s Bonners Ferry High School graduates that participated in track and/or cross-country. This year’s scholarship recipients are Jared Lysne and Sydney Hubbard. Lynse will be attending the University of Idaho to study chemistry and chemical engineering. Hubbard will be attending Brigham Young University to study fine arts.
Many volunteers helped make the run a success. The water stations were handled by 4H club members. Members of the Masonic Lodge along with other citizens acted as course marshals. Carol Thompson handled the timing at the finish line. Brenda Woodward designed and embroidered the T-shirt logo. The Boundary Volunteer Ambulance crew was on hand as well as a Bonners Ferry Police Department officer. Super 1 and Harvest Foods provided fruit at the finish area. Several local businesses provided door prizes, including Mugsy’s, Kootenai River Brewing Company, Far North Outfitters, and Keep in Touch Massage. Jessica Tingley and her troop of belly dancers provided entertainment at the finish area. Northwest Academy sponsored the run and students and faculty members accounted for approximately 25 percent of the total entries.
The Kootenai River Run committee members greatly appreciates the volunteers and runners that made this year’s run a success. We hope to see you all again next year.
