Dig Pink raises more than $2,100

During their fourth annual Dig Pink event, Bonners Ferry High School volleyball players raised $2,186.50.

The volleyball teams gave $1,000 of the funds raised to the Bonners Ferry Women’s Cancer Support Group, which provides travel vouchers to local cancer patients traveling for treatments and appointments. The remainder of the money was donated to the Side Out Foundation.

Volleyball teams (Varsity, JV and C-team) raised money through donations, a silent auction, gate fees and uniform sponsors. More than 70 items and gift certificates were donated for the silent auction, many with a pink theme.

The players asked businesses or individuals to sponsor their uniform and in return the sponsor received a T-shirt and had their name printed on the uniform.

Each girl played in honor or in memory of someone battling cancer during the Dig Pink event on Oct. 1. They also presented carnations to cancer survivors and those battling cancer at the game.

From the pink volleyball to pink clothes worn by spectators, the support for cancer survivors and their families was extraordinary, said Coach Janis Tucker.

Dig Pink began four years ago when assistant coach Desi Staples suggested the idea. Staples played volleyball in college and her team held Dig Pink events. She brought the idea with her to Bonners Ferry and the teams adopted it.
