Burns permits reopened

BONNERS FERRY – The arrival of cool, moist weather has reduced fire danger to the “low” level, enabling fire managers to issue fire safety permits for all forms of burning.

Boundary County residents may see an increase in slash pile burning associated with logging and land clearing activities. 

Many of these piles are quite large and produce large flames and considerable smoke. Residents alarmed by the sight of smoke and flames in the forest are encouraged to consider the possibility of slash burning before calling 911.

Although fire danger has subsided, the State of Idaho Closed Burning Season extends through October 20 of each year. Burn permits are required until after this date.

In addition to obtaining fire safety burn permits in person at IDL offices statewide, individuals planning to burn now will be able to use a new online self service burn permit application to obtain a fire safety burn permit. The Web site is BurnPermits.idaho.gov.

For those unable to access the Web site, permits can be obtained or renewed at the IDL office in Bonners Ferry, located at 6327 Main St., or by calling (208) 267-5577.

Burn permits within the City limits of Bonners Ferry must be obtained at City Hall. Burn permits within the City of Moyie Springs must be obtained by calling the City Fire Chief.

Those expecting to burn should let their local rural fire department know before burning.

People are reminded to attend their burning at all times and ensure fires are cold to the touch before leaving them unattended. Persons found to be responsible for escaped fires or for burning without a permit will be billed for these responses.
