Volunteers needed for Relay For Life

| February 7, 2014 10:13 AM

The American Cancer Society, the nation’s leading voluntary health organization, is looking for volunteers for its national signature activity, Relay For Life.

Walkers and runners, cancer survivors, community leaders, team captains – come one, come all, to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Bonners Ferry.

Volunteers are needed in every aspect of planning Relay for Life, scheduled for Aug. 22. Volunteers can choose to chair a committee or be part of a committee.

Relay for Life requires a lot of planning but by being divided into small committees, the planning isn’t as overwhelming.

Committees include: events, team retention and mentoring, team recruitment, team recognition, youth engagement, fundraising, sponsorship, online, survivor and caregiver, mission, advocacy, publicity, registration and accounting, luminaria, logistics, and entertainment/activities/ceremonies.

Do you have a skill or talent? A knack for party planning? Connections in the community that would help you chair a committee?

Jaycee Atkins at the Bonners Ferry Herald volunteered to chair the publicity committee because it was a natural fit. Do you have a similar fit for any of the above committees?

If so, sign-up to volunteer or learn more at the next meeting on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at Riverside Auto Center or contact Abbie Davis at abbie.davis@cancer.org or 509-242-8281.

All the planning and volunteering culminates in an overnight event that brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking or running on a track.

Relay For Life begins with a Cancer Survivors Lap and a ceremony to celebrate life. After the opening ceremony, Relay For Life participants remember all of those touched by cancer in a moving, candlelit ceremony.

The funds raised from this event will go toward the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and patient services.
