Wrestlers prepare for district meet

BONNERS FERRY — The heavier weights held it down for the Spartan wrestling team, which got five grapplers inside the top three including a first place finish at 145-pounds from senior Dallas Hopkins at Saturday’s Bonners Ferry Invitational.

Joe Swartz (182), Bret Fink (195), and Gabe Bellah (220) each earned their way into the championship match and finished second overall for the Spartans. Junior Luke MacDonald (170) improved his record to 18-10 as the consolation champion and third place finisher.

Priest River finished just five points behind St. Maries and Timberlake to place fifth as a team, despite having to fill numerous weights with younger wrestlers due to injury and sickness.

The 4A Lakeland Hawks finished with six individual champions to run away with the team championship.

“Lakeland had some big, tough bruisers but our big guys making it to the finals proves their No. 1 in our league,” Priest River coach Jake Stark said. The coach added that only 14 of his grapplers from a roster of 29 made the trip to wrestle for various reasons but felt, “those guys that did make the trip wrestled well and represented Priest River.”

Hopkins (26-5), Idaho’s top ranked wrestler in the 3A classification, helped the Spartans by scoring 22 team points after posting a last second 11-10 decision win over St. Maries Josh Richmond (27-9) in the championship.

With the match tied 9-9 the Spartan got behind a point after an escape by his opponent, but scored two points to win the match 11-10 on a reversal with just 20 seconds left on the clock.

“He (Hopkins) really controlled the match the whole way and was able to ride out the win,” coach Stark said. Adding that he feels his captain is, “peaking at the right time.”

The coach went on to point out all his wrestlers at the upper weights for stepping up and especially junior Bret Fink, who the coach feels has a newfound sense of determination or as he called it, “the eye of the tiger.”

The Spartans receive 10 days of much needed rest before starting the Region I, District I-II Wrestling Championships at Lakeland High School next Saturday, Feb. 22 starting at 9 a.m. Finals start around 3:15 p.m. with awards to follow the matches.

The top three finishers from each weight class will qualify for 3A State Championships the following weekend at the Idaho Center in Nampa.

“It was a busy end to the week and we already have a bunch of kids injured or sick, but we got two weeks before districts to get mentally ready and refine moves. It’s all the small things that will matter,” said Stark.
