BONNERS FERRY — Organizer Gary Leonard pronounced the small and personable July fourth celebration at Bonners Ferry’s Memorial Park a success after last-minute donors came through and pushed the total funds to $5,808.17.

While still short of the $6,000 goal, Leonard says this pays for the fireworks and most of the necessary bills for the celebration.

“Fundraising is the most stressful part,” says Leonard, who hopes to turn that part of the celebration over to someone else for next year.

Leonard now works as a deputy sheriff in Bonner County at the jail and does consulting and auditing work that won’t allow him as much free time to devote to the cause. He would like to see it stay small though.

“If it becomes a commercial venture, it loses a lot of it’s personality,” Leonard said.
