COEUR d’ALENE — Idaho State Police officials on Tuesday released the names of the three Coeur d’Alene police officers involved in the June 6 shooting that left one man dead.

The officers are Sgt. Greg Moore, officer Johann Schmitz and officer Jacob Nielsen. Moore has been with the department for 15 years, Schmitz for two years and Nielsen for one-and-a-half years.

All three are on paid administrative leave, said Teresa Baker, a spokeswoman for the state police.

“All three of the officers listed fired their weapons at White, but we aren’t releasing how many shots were fired by either party at this time as we are not done with the investigation,” Baker told The Press Tuesday.

The shooting resulted in the death of Thomas L. White, 28, of Coeur d’Alene, police said.

The initial investigation has revealed that officers responded to a domestic disturbance call around 9 p.m. on June 6.

The first officers on scene “detected concern from the family regarding White’s actions and his potential return to the house,” a news release said Tuesday.

After searching for White, officers located him in the backyard of a neighbor’s home.

White went to the second-floor deck of the neighbor’s house and “the officers gave verbal commands to White.”

The officers, who had moved to the backyard corner of the house, saw that White was holding a gun, the new release said.

The officers told White to put the gun down and come down from the deck so they could talk with him.

“The officers made multiple requests to gain White’s compliance,” the news release said. “White then pointed the gun at the officers and ignored repeated commands to drop the gun, put his hands on his head, and come down the stairs.”

Then shots were fired by White and the three Coeur d’Alene officers. White was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsy results are pending.

No officers were injured.

Baker said she didn’t know if the officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the incident.

“Any further information will not be released until the investigation is completed, including the review by the prosecutor’s office,” Baker said.
