BONNERS FERRY — Two men are injured and another in jail after a pipe bomb exploded on the doorstep of a residence by the hospital.

When Rock Stapley opened the door to his father’s house just after 1 a.m. on March 9, a homemade pipe bomb was sitting just outside.

Stapley slammed the door just as the device went off, blowing the corner off the door and sending shrapnel through Stapley’s leg from foot to thigh. A second man, who prefers to remain anonymous, was also injured.

Investigation by Bonners Ferry Police, Idaho State Police, and Federal ATF agents led to the arrest of Allen J. Stafford, aka Allen Avery.

Stafford, 19, is charged with felony unlawful use of an explosive device and misdemeanor vandalism. Bail is set for $300,000 as Stafford awaits trial.

Rock Stapley’s father, homeowner Ross Stapley, was jarred awake by the explosion. The force of the blast just outside his bedroom rippled the steel sheeting of the trailer house and knocked paneling and a wall-mounted heater off the inside wall.
