Have you taken a drive around the Auto Tour at the Refuge lately? Spring is in full swing at Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge and new surprises await at each visit.

Mark your calendars for several events coming this spring and summer.

The Friends of Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge will be celebrating Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 17 with a bird identification class at 9 a.m. at the Education Barn followed by a bird walk.

All ages and levels of birders are welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them.

The Friends of KNWR hold monthly bird walks year-round on the third Saturday of every month at 9 a.m. beginning at the Education Barn. Come learn to identify birds or share your knowledge with others.

This year marks the Refuge’s 50th anniversary and a big celebration is being planned for Saturday, June 21.

Stop by for a chance to talk with past Refuge managers and view historical panels of the Refuge or come out for the Birds of Prey presentation that will feature live eagles and hawks.

If you can’t make it out to the Refuge, stop by virtually by visiting the eagle cam online at www.sandpointonline.com/eagles. Last year the eagle cam captured a pair of bald eagles incubating eggs but they didn’t hatch. This year a pair of Canada geese has taken over the nest.

The Friends of KNWR have dubbed the webcam a “geegle” cam for the year. Check the link often to see when the goslings hatch and how long they stay in the nest.
