Badgers beat Spartans, lose to 'Dogs

BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry Badgers beat the Priest River Spartans 9 - 3 in the first game of the Bonners Ferry tournament March 27 then lost to the Sandpoint Bulldogs 6 - 2 in the night cap. Saturday’s games were cancelled due to the weather.

GAME 1 – Bonners Ferry 9, Priest River 3

Sophomore Kevin Gray pitched a complete game, giving up 6 hits and striking out 8 while walking only one batter in the 9 – 3 win.

Priest River started the scoring in the top of the second inning, scoring their only 3 runs on 5 hits. After that inning, Gray settled down to allow just one more hit for the Spartans. The Badgers responded with 2 runs in their half of the second when brothers Chris Sabin and Nick Sabin both reached base on a walk and later scored on an error from the shortstop. Bonners Ferry added 4 more runs in the fourth inning after Jesse Dunham had a bunt single to load the bases. Brady Bateman then hit a 2 run single and Chris Sabin hit a 2 run double down the left field line. The Badgers added 3 runs in the fifth inning when Caleb Gering hit a single and Dunham hit a double to left. Bateman then hit another 2 run single to score Gering and Dunham. Bateman scored on a balk by the pitcher.

The Badgers were led by Dunham and Bateman with 2 hits each in the game. Bateman had 4 RBI.

GAME 2 – Bonners Ferry 2, Sandpoint 6

The Badgers got 10 hits in the game but lost to the Bulldogs 6 – 2, stranding 11 runners on base.

Sandpoint scored 2 runs in the top of the first and one in the second inning to take a 3 – 0 lead going into the bottom of the second. The Badgers scored a run in the second inning after Vince Bennett singled and later scored on a passed ball. Sandpoint responded in the fourth inning, scoring a run on a passed ball to make the score 4 – 1. The Badgers added another run to cut the margin to 4 – 2 in the bottom of the fifth when Jesse Dunham hit a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Bennett. The Bulldogs added 2 more runs in the sixth inning to secure the 6 – 2 win.

Brady Bateman got 3 hits in the game while Steve Anzalone and Nick Sabin got 2 hits each.

Bonners Ferry JV hosts LV Rogers this Saturday at home for a double header beginning at 11 a.m. followed by the Bonners Ferry varsity playing Sandpoint varsity at 3 p.m.
