• Lightning bolts may strike in one location or they may split and simultaneously strike multiple points up to five miles apart.
• 30-40 percent of lightning activity happens away from under the storm cloud.
• You can never be completely safe from lightning but you can mitigate the risks.
• Direct strikes account for 3-5 percent of lightning fatalities, upward leaders (streamers) 10-15 percent, conduction 15-20 percent, side flashes 20-30 percent and ground current 40-50 percent.
