Kootenai River Run releases results

BONNERS FERRY — Sunny skies welcomed runners and walkers to the annual Kootenai River Run on Saturday, June 13. Preston Johnson, a BFHS senior, summed up the atmosphere of the race with a cartwheel finish for second place in the 5K--the first cartwheel finish for the race since it began in 1977.

“We had a good race, solid turnout and beautiful weather,” said Paul Bonnell, one of the race organizers.

Thirty-five people participated in the 10K race and 132 participated in the 5K race for a total turnout of 167 finishers--more than last year.

The overall winners for the 10K race were the same as last year, Amber Yassine for women with a time of 43:55 and Micah Krmpotich for the men with a time of 37:40. Cindy Ryan was the overall women’s 5K winner with a time of 24:19 and Tucker Cavender the overall men’s 5K winner with a time of 19:37.

Lots of local runners and youth participated in the run including youth and parents from Northwest Academy, one of the sponsors of the race. Several former Bonners Ferry High School runners also participated in the race.

Runners and walkers were cheered on by entertainment along the route, including the Restorium Renegades with water soakers and Jessica Tingley with her belly dancing group. More musicians along the race course are being sought for next year’s race.

Ribbons were awarded to the top three finishers in each age group and trophies were awarded to the top male and female finisher in each race. Numerous door prizes were awarded thanks to many local business donations, including Mugsy’s, Keep in Touch Massage, Far North Outfitters, Hear Rock Wines, Goat Mountain Pizzeria, Hank Willis DDS and the Corn Man. Eight-year-old Izayeh Araya won the $100 gift certificate from Sport Town in Spokane. This year’s t-shirts were designed by Brenda “The Dorf” Woodward.

“We always appreciate the support from local businesses,” said Bonnell.

Proceeds from the Kootenai River Run provide local student runners with scholarships. The scholarship recipients of this year’s race are Tucker Cavendar and Mackenzie Mendenhall, both who have participated in the run several times.
