Farmers markets celebrate statewide

BOISE — Farmers markets are becoming increasingly popular throughout the state as both an alternative source of fresh food and produce and a venue where local farmers, artisans and others can sell their wares. Gov. Butch Otter has officially recognized this phenomenon by declaring Aug. 7 through 13 Idaho Farmers Market Week in conjunction with National Farmers Market Week.

Currently, 44 such markets are in operation in the state, according to information from the governor’s office. The Idaho Farmers Market Association, under the directorship of Kaz Thea, and the Idaho State Department of Agriculture work to promote the markets year-round.

“National Farmers Market Week is a great opportunity to celebrate our 44 Idaho farmers markets across the state,” Thea said. “These markets provide communities with the chance to celebrate our local farmers and preserve America’s rural livelihood, stimulate local economies, gain access to fresh and nutritious food to support healthy communities, and promote sustainability.”

Farmers markets in Idaho are often the hubs of their communities, offering fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers, honey, baked goods, meats and more. Shoppers can stroll to the sounds of live music, meet and greet their friends and have lunch, all in the same outdoor location.

“Farmers markets serve as a great nexus for bringing together producers and vendors with the general public to share in Idaho’s premier local products,” said Celia Gould, director of ISDA.
