CAP to give away school backpacks

| August 18, 2016 1:00 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Community Action Network would like to say to the Bonners Ferry community, U ROCK!

The amount of food donated since the beginning of the year has been fantastic, according to Liz Bigsby, community engagement liaison with CAP.

“You are a tremendous support for your local food bank,” she said. “Each year I am amazed at the support offered, but this year, food donations were amazing.”

Partnerships, community members and local organizations bring in fresh produce, nonperishables, and baked and canned goods that enable CAP to provide clients with substantial food boxes. The community’s dedication in helping the organization put meals on the tables of local families demonstrates its commitment to families in need, Bigsby said.

This month is the time to sign up for back-to-school backpacks filled with school supplies for kindergarteners through high school students. Donations from local businesses and the Salvation Army make the program possible.

Bigsby encourages area residents to stop by the Community Action Partnership booth at the upcoming Boundary County Fair to learn more about the organization and the services it brings to the community. Fair visitors can find out how to organize a food drive as well as other ways to get involved.

CAP operates food banks in Coeur d’Alene, St. Maries and Lewiston in addition to its Bonners Ferry location at 6665 Main St. Income-qualified individuals and families can receive nonperishable items as well as TEFAP commodities and fresh foods to supplement their budgets and/or food stamp allotment. It is a community action agency serving the 10 northernmost Idaho counties and Asotin County of Wash.
