BONNERS FERRY — Friday at the fair was the second horse show for 4-H participants following Monday’s Showmanship events. Senior, intermediate and junior riders competed in the O-Mok-See competition, which included barrel racing, capture the flag, figure 8, keyhole, poles and other events.

Participants cheered each other on and commiserated with those whose mounts knocked over a barrel or got spooked by a flag. The fun competition was the final 4-H horse event of this year’s Boundary County Fair.

Superintendent Kelly Spangler has worked with the 4-H horse and rider program for 18 years, and this year was extra-special because her daughter, Brittany, won first place overall in the horse events as well as top showman.

The equestrian events at the fair are one of two horse shows her group prepares for each year, Spangler said. They also have a horse camp each summer. The group of 28 children, ages 8 through 18, gets together to ride once per week as well.

“It’s a great group of kids,” said Spangler. “We have a lot of fun.”
