Badgers squeak by Newport
The Bonners Ferry girls basketball team eeked out a win in their second game of the season against Newport on Nov. 29. The final score was 45-42.
It was a back-and-forth game with the lead changing hands repeatedly in four quarters of play. Newport had a two-point lead going into halftime, but a third-quarter rally by the Badgers’ offense gave them a two-point advantage over the Grizzlies going into the final quarter.
Both offenses turned it up a notch in the fourth, putting up more combined points than in any of the other three quarters, and with only two minutes left in the game, the score was tied. Overtime seemed imminent, but the Bonners Ferry team was able to knock down a couple buckets in the final minute to take the lead when it mattered most.
Casey Skeen led the Badgers in scoring with 19 points on the night. Nicole Donn, who was responsible for the team’s only three-pointer, netted 14 points. Miranda Wenk had six points, while Jersey Pluid, Natasha Webster and Emmi Mullerschoen each contributed two points.
According to head coach Rich Feickert, the lady Badgers were still playing short and two of the team’s starters were out. “But there wasn’t any quit in the rest of the team,” Feickert says. “With the girls forced to play positions that they were unfamiliar with, we managed to squeak by.” Feickert went on to say that he is looking forward to getting everyone healthy and having his starting five back.
