Bonners Ferry wrestlers beat Newport, fall to Sandpoint in double duel

BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry varsity wrestling team competed in a double duel at home against Newport and Sandpoint on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

The Badgers took on Newport first and won the duel handily: 60-30.

Ben Tadlock, wrestling in the 106 lb. class, won his match and earned a total of 6 team points.

Kenny Blank, wrestling in the 120 lb. class, fell to Gage Seger from Newport.

Denton Eby, wrestling in the 126 lb. class, fell to Nate Allen from Newport (4:55).

Mason Eby, wrestling in the 138 lb. class, pinned Colton Malsbury from Newport (3:12) and earned a total of 6 team points.

Nikolous Bertling, wrestling in the 145 lb. class, pinned Tyler Ward from Newport (0:58) and earned a total of 6 team points.

Jesse Sandelin, wrestling in the 160 lb. class, pinned Bailey Corkrum from Newport (1:51) and earned a total of 6 team points.

TJ Smith, wrestling in the 170 lb. class, pinned Jed Cup from Newport (3:31) and earned a total of 6 team points.

Ronney Craig, wrestling in the 285 lb. class, won his match and earned a total of 6 team points.

Carver Copley, Tyler Beazer, Slater Copley and Connor Underhill all received byes, earning 6 team points apiece and bringing the Badgers’ total team score to 60 points.

The wrestlers from Sandpoint made for much stiffer competition, and although the Badgers looked strong against Newport, they lost the duel to the Bulldogs 66-14. Only three of Bonners Ferry’s wrestlers were able to win their matches, while Sandpoint cleaned up the rest.

When asked about the loss to Sandpoint, head coach Conrad Garner told the Herald it comes down to underclassmen going up against more experienced upperclassmen, as there are only two seniors on the Bonners Ferry team this season: “We’re just young this year and Sandpoint has more upperclassmen on the team.”

Carver Copley, wrestling in the 98 lb. class, fell to Tyson Bushell from Sandpoint (0:46).

Ben Tadlock, wrestling in the 106 lb. class, fell to Casey Olesen from Sandpoint (0:53).

Tyler Beazer, wrestling in the 113 lb. class, won by decision against Parker Coon from Sandpoint (12-3), earning a total of 4 team points.

Denton Eby, wrestling in the 126 lb. class, fell to Micah Holub from Sandpoint (2:32).

Slater Copley, wrestling in the 132 lb. class, fell to Tucker Hall from Sandpoint (2:54).

Mason Eby, wrestling in the 138 lb. class, lost by decision to Scout Nash from Sandpoint (0-7).

Nikolous Bertling, wrestling in the 145 lb. class, fell to Malachi Mazzare from Sandpoint (1:34).

Connor Underhill, wrestling in the 152 lb. class, fell to Preston Bunty from Sandpoint (1:25).

Jesse Sandelin, wrestling in the 160 lb. class, won by decision against Isaiah Fleck from Sandpoint (11-2).

TJ Smith, wrestling in the 170 lb. class, lost by decision to Tekoa Mazzare (1-5).

Ronney Craig, wrestling in the 285 lb. class, received a bye to earn a total of 4 team points. Craig then wrestled in an exhibition match and fell to Zach Alamillo from Sandpoint (0:46).

The Badgers will travel to Libby on Thursday, Dec. 22 to take on the Loggers.
