History for December 29th, 2016 100 Year A.H. Mullen, owner of a ranch down the valley a few miles, committed suicide about nine o’clock this morning at the Bonner hotel. Mrs. S. J. Smith, who is the proprietress of the Bonner hotel heard moaning in the kitchen but thought it was the dog. The moaning increasing she entered the room and found Mullen in convulsions. Local physicians were called at once and an investigation showed that he was suffering form strychnine poisoning. A bottle of strychnine, half full, was found on Mullen’s person. Mrs. Smith stated Mullen had met with financial troubles since buying the ranch and that his crops this year were a failure owing to the high waters of last spring. The prisoners at the county jail were treated yesterday to a turkey Christmas dinner and all the good things that go with the usual turkey feast. There are now nine prisoners at the jail, several of whom are being held by the immigration department for deportation. Not content with the reputation of having one of the well-equipped repair and blacksmith shops of the district the firm of Meeker & Schweigert recently installed an oxyacetylene welding machine with which it is possible to weld nearly all kinds of metal in such a manner as to insure the weld being as strong as the original metal. The machine is an expensive one and will fill a much felt need in Boundary county. Lost – Last Saturday evening, somewhere between Moore Bros.’ Clothing store and the old Critic printing office, a roll of bills amounting to $100.00 in $10 and $20 denominations. Finder please leave at Herald office and receive suitable reward. 50 Year Call it a Christmas present, a bonus – or whatever you wish – your electric light bill will be cut in half this month if you’re getting your electricity from the Bonners Ferry municipal light department. The discount on electric power is made possible by a slight rate deduction appearing in year-end rate calculations. Pacific Gas Transmission company has paid Boundary County the first half of its $170,500.96 in ad valorem property taxes for 1966-67. The payment is up from $165,961.41 last year. About half of the money will go to schools. In Boundary county, PGT owns 41.7 miles of 36-inch-diameter pipeline, a measurement station near Bonners Ferry, and microwave communication stations near Porthill and on Black mountain. It was disclosed this week that Sen. Len Jordan in November submitted the names of Publisher W.A. Chubb of Bonners Ferry and Miss Louise Shadduck of Boise, executive secretary of the Idaho Department of Commerce and Development, to serve on the advisory committee for United States participation in the Canadian World Fair to be held in 1967. A series of six free ski lessons for women is being offered after the first of the year by Schweitzer Basin. For beginners only, classes will be held each Tuesday (Ladies Day) from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Rentals are available. A total of 150 dairy cows in the Panhandle Dairy Herd Improvement association averaged 1,001 pounds of milk and 42.1 pounds of butterfat during October. Don Tobias, Bonners Ferry, led the group with a herd average of 992 pounds of milk and 45 pounds of butterfat. 15 Year Seen N’Heard…. A most happy 27th year anniversary to Dr. Marty & Teresa Becker – in dog years, that come to 189 years for the old pooch doctor and his bride After the Herald ran a story about conflicting population numbers posted by signs north and south of Bonners Ferry, Idaho Magazine picked it up, calling it “A couple of spuds short of a full town.” Apparently, the Boise-based magazine got it into its noggin that this is Simplot potato country and we’re growing potatoes like wildflowers up here. Kinda’ makes you wonder if the big city folks are just a couple of spuds short of a full deck. Paradise Valley Volunteer Fire Department has collected the best recipes from group members, family and friends and combined them into an attractive keepsake cookbook. Boundary Farmers Supply, Inc., will be closed “at least temporarily” at the beginning of the new year. Just when the Lady Badgers were practically given up for dead, junior Jodi Blackmore literally stole the show in a dramatic, last-second victory over Northwest Christian Dec. 18. Trailing by a point with five seconds left to play, Blackmore stole the ball past mid-court and made a diving layup at the buzzer to stun the Crusaders 48-47.
