| July 21, 2016 1:00 AM

A Bonners Ferry High School student is among those named as recipients of the 2016 Governor’s Cup Scholarships to Idaho colleges and universities by Gov C.L. “Butch” Otte. The 41st Governor’s Cup fund-raising drive brought in enough money for a record 40 new scholarships to be award this year — two more than in 2015.

Recipients were chosen from among more than 700 applicants by the Idaho Governor’s Cup Scholarship Fund Inc.’s 15-member board of directors. Selections were made based on each applicant’s commitment to public service, academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.

The award is $3,000 per year, renewable for up to four years, or two to three years for professional-technical programs, contingent upon the availability of funds.

Among those receiving the scholarship is Erica Wood of Bonners Ferry High School who will be ttending the University of Idaho.

“It’s an honor to work with the generous sponsors who make the Governor’s Cup Scholarship program possible, and it’s a privilege to watch great Idaho students get the chance to reach their academic goals right here at home,” Otter said.

“They are the leaders who will build stronger Idaho communities for the future.

“The civic virtue and commitment to sustainably investing in Idaho’s future that’s expressed by everyone involved in the Governor’s Cup program is as inspiring to me as it is critical to our success.”

The governor and First Lady Lori Otter participated in a reception honoring the recipients on June 22.
