Fair avian flu inspections set

| July 21, 2016 1:00 AM

Anyone who plans to exhibit poultry at the Boundary County Fair this year will need to bring their birds (in cages) to the Boundary County Extension Office parking lot on Tuesday, July 26, between 12:30 and 6 p.m. for the Idaho State Department of Agriculture livestock inspection for avian influenza.

A sample will be taken from each bird, and leg bands will be distributed to those who have been sampled. Only poultry with these leg bands will be allowed to be exhibited at the fair. Since it takes two to three weeks to complete the testing, Boundary County Fair officials said they will know before the fair if there are any poultry testing positive for AI.

AI is spread by waterfowl, who typically have no symptoms. For this reason, no waterfowl will be allowed to exhibit at the fair.
