WALT KIRBY

There’s a new sheriff in town.

Well, there will be come November.

During Tuesday’s local primary, Dave Kramer upset current sheriff Greg Sprungl and fellow candidate Dave Schuman, earning the opportunity to claim the job at the general election in November. Kramer received 1,080 votes, Schuman 681 and Sprungl 526.

With almost four decades in law enforcement, including 20 years as the Bonners Ferry Chief of Police, Kramer said he appreciates the support of the community and is ready for the challenge.

“Now I’m looking forward to moving forward with the county’s support,” Kramer said. “The sheriff has to be someone who responds for all the people in the county, not just city. That’s my intention, to try and be fair and move forward. I thank Boundary County for it’s trust, and should I win again in November, I will do my best to serve all the citizens of our beautiful county, as well as those who come to visit, with professional, transparent law enforcement.”

County Commisoner 2nd District Walt Kirby was involved in perhaps the closest race of the evening, edging candidate Donna Capurso by a mere 50 votes, 1123-1073. Third District Commisioner Dan Dinning ran unopposed receiving 1,796 votes.

Boundary County Clerk Glenda Poston said she was pleased with local voter turnout this election.

“It was a good turnout, which is always nice to see,” Poston said. “We had a 46 percent turnout rating, compared to 41 percent during the 2014 primary election, which is always encouraging.”

In the voting for Idaho State Legislators, Republican incumbent Shawn Keough of Idaho District 1 tallied 1,279 votes to challenger Glenn Rohrer’s 904 to move on to the general election in November. Democrat Steve Tanner, who ran unopposed, will square off with Keough in November. Republican incumbents Heather Scott and Sage Dixon also move on to the general election as well as Democrats Kate McAlister and Stephen Howlett who will campaign against Scott and Dixon respectively.
