100 Year

Bids for the hauling of gravel and dirt for the city dyking were opened Monday evening and the contract awarded to W.A. Leslie. The specifications call for the hauling of 1,578 yards of dirt. Mr. Leslie began to haul dirt on Wednesday.

Sturgeon fishermen have been lucky the last few weeks. Among the catches reported are two made by Ralph Fisher and one by Walter Aldridge. Clarence Fry also caught two large sturgeon in the Kootenai river Sunday on lines set about five miles below town. The fish weighed about 250 pounds each.

Copeland - Miss Anna Olden had the misfortune to sprain her ankle Saturday while walking home from the post office. She is rapidly recovering.

The Northside Band has arranged for an excursion down the river to Ball Creek and an all-day picnic for Sunday, June 4th.

The trip will be made on the Steamer Crescent and barge and a large crowd will be accomodated. The band will provide music on both the down and up river trips.

50 Year

Dennis M. Balascio was inducted in the US. Army on May 12th and is assigned to Fort Ord, Calif., for basic training.

This fills Boundary county’s call for one man for the month of May.

Ralph W. Eckhart, 40, prominent wheat rancher and resident of the Porthill area since 1950, passed away suddenly at his home Tuesday morning. He purchased the K.V. farms at Porthill, operating the extensive farming property until his death.

The resignation of Dale A. Miller as Administrator of Community hospital was announced today by the board of trustees for the hospital. The resignation is effective July 15. Miller stated that his reasons for leaving are personal and his future plans are not definite enough to release at the present time.

The Bonners Ferry float made its first appearance of the year last Saturday in the Creston Blossom Festival parade. The float’s attractiveness was considerably enhanced by its passengers, Miss Bonners Ferry, Linda Engert, and princesses Ingrid Erickson and Ginger Mace. The float placed second in the organization division of the parade.

The decision whether Boundary County will have three cell towers cutting into its horizon, two of which were originally specified to reach 350 feet in height, will have to wait – at least until June 4.

Commissioners held off their decision at Monday’s public hearing that drew almost residents. Voicing concern about the p & z meeting that recommended the ordinance, commissioners instead said they needed to seek legal counsel about the April 10 hearing.

Self-serve regular unleaded gasoline is averaging $1.59 a gallon in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. That’s an increase of nine cents a gallon from a survey done at Easter.

Diesel fuel is higher than it was in mid-April. Self-serve is up four cents a gallon to $1.66, and full-serve is three cents higher at $1.74.

Plans to annex the remaining Marx subdivision and its outlying areas came to a sudden halt last week when the City of Bonners Ferry learned it was in non-compliance of the 1975 Land Use Planning Act for neglecting to adopt a Comprehensive Plan over two decades ago.
