Mayor Evans steps down

The city of Moyie Springs hopes to appoint a new mayor next week, after Mayor Doug Evans stepped down from his post.

Evans resigned during the Oct. 5, Moyie Springs City Council meeting, but submitted a formal resignation letter on Sept. 22, according to City Clerk Donna Wilson-Funkhouser.

In his letter, Evans said he was resigning due to health reasons.

“Dear employees and council of Moyie Springs, it has been a pleasure to serve as mayor and councilman for the last eighteen or more years,” Evans stated in his resignation letter. “I am sorry to inform you that, due to health and other personal reasons, I do resign as mayor. I wish Moyie the best as they move into the future.”

The council voted unanimously to appoint Evans as mayor in June 2008. Evans had served as council president for six and a half years prior to replacing the late Joe Mesenbrink, who died from cancer on May 7, 2008. Mesenbrink had served as mayor for 13 years.

According to Wilson-Funkhouser, Council Foreman Chad Farrens will likely take over Evans’ position on Nov. 9, during the city’s next scheduled session.
