Walt Kirby (R), 86 Incumbent County Commissioner District Two Retired businessman
1. Civic duty, after 30 years of working on small business ventures in Boundary County.
2. Many years experience in aerospace manufacturing, and before that, 30 plus years of self-employment and business ownership. I feel this experience allows me to have the proper viewpoint for the duties required of the office of County Commissioner.
3. Economic developments, planning and zoning issues, and business recruitment. Without vibrant activity in the business community, the county doesn’t have the ability to prosper.
4. I have been working with the county’s economic development professional and as a member of the Economic Development Council since its inception. This work, along with my position as County Commissioner, is in support of all business activities.
5. That of being the commissioner who listened and acted appropriately to all who came to our office with problems great and small.
6. County Commissioners have a very long list of duties in the Idaho Code Book. In my 13 years as a commissioner, I find this list helpful, but in reality it is a guide. A typical day in our office is controlled by the agenda, which is a list of all the necessary items that must be addressed that day. The commissioners work through these items and discuss them, getting legal advice when necessary and consulting with the citizens involved, which allows a fair and calm answer to each.
7. To be able to continue working for the many citizens of Boundary County who are volunteering on the many boards and committees that exist for the good of us all.
8. Most of the challenges facing the county are state and federal issues. As such, we as county commissioners have very little influence. We do, however, have direct contact with all the elected officials that do have a voice in these issues. We make regular contact with these state and federal representatives verbally and through writing. My experience in taking county issues to them has been suprisingly successful.
9. Advising anyone of voting age to get registered and vote. This is the right and duty of all citizens!
10. This has been the quietest election of my political career. I very seldom receive harsh criticism in person, or by phone or mail, but when I do, I try to get the facts and speak to everyone involved in order to reach an appropriate conclusion.
11. My record as a County Commissioner for the thirteen or so years that voters have kept me in office. This is the one thing that keeps me coming back to serve as commissioner.
12. Do you have an agenda? If elected, I will leave it at home and do what the people need and want!
