Most of us know the Shook Twins, Katelyn and Laurie Shook…at least, some of us seem to have known them as we watched them growing up in the 80’s and 90’s. Before they came on the music scene, they danced around the halls of Bonners Ferry High School like two little princesses, visiting the school with their teacher parents, Patty and Dan Shook. Even then, they had celebrity status. As the years pass, we continue to celebrate the amazing talent and accomplishment of these two young women: musicians with incredible harmonies and eclectic sound.

Katelyn and Laurie, born and raised in Sandpoint, now lead an indie folk pop band that brings down the house each year in their Thanksgiving concerts at The Pearl. Central to Shook Twins’ sound is their wide range of instrumentation: banjo, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, mandolin, electronic drums, face drum (beat-box), glockenspiel, ukulele, banjo-head drumming. If they don’t have the instrument, they invent it, like their re-purposed telephone microphones and their signature Golden Egg. Their unique blend of beat boxing, percussive and ambient vocal looping, and operatic solos blend perfectly with traditional folk sounds.

Katelyn and Laurie write most of the songs, but they also back up their band member Niko Slice (electric guitar, mandolin and vocals) adding his uniquely compelling songs to the mix. Barra Brown is on Drums, vocals and Drum Pad, and Josh Simon is on Bass, vocals, Electric guitar, and synth.

Shook Twins relocated to Portland, Oregon in 2009. Since then, they have travelled to local and international festivals throughout the summer, gaining fans of all ages with each new venue. Shook Twins have shared the stage with artists like Ryan Adams, Gregory Alan Isakov, Greensky Bluegrass, Mason Jennings, Blitzen Trapper, Railroad Earth, Keller Williams, David Grisman, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Sarah Jarosz, Laura Veirs, The Fruit Bats, Jonathan Brooke, JJ Grey and MoFro, The Indigo Girls, Crooked Still, Jason Webley, The BoDeans, Elephant Revival and more.

Audiences love Shook Twins’ eccentric blend of musical genres, including folk, roots, groove, pop, and soul. Their musical story-telling and fluid style takes audiences on a journey, surpassing any ordinary concert. Taking this journey in such a perfect small-audience venue like The Pearl provides our hometown crowd a memorable and unique musical experience.

“I love the harmonies of the Shook Twins, the dreamlike songs that seem somehow permeated by the American Folk tradition, without actually being part of it. They make music that twines through your soul the way vines cover an abandoned shack in the woods.” – Neil Gaiman, New York Times Best-Selling Author

The Shook Twins will take the stage at the Pearl on Friday, Nov. 25. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
