With one month of the 2016-2017 school year already done, Boundary County Middle School is in full active mode.

We started this year with some new schoolwide expectations of behavior — safe, civil, and productive. Teachers and students focused on learning and explaining these new expectations so the year would be full of good choices being made. The minimal amount of office referrals seems proof that students are making great decisions.

Speaking of good decisions, our school recognizes good behavior in several ways one of which is our Citizen of the Month program. Monthly we have a trait of good behavior that we are looking for and at the end of the month we vote on one student from each grade and a staff member who displayed this trait throughout the month. September’s trait was respect and our Citizens of the Month were Maggie Bateman, sixth grade; Geneva Bontrager, seventh grade; Jeannie Pinkerton, eighth grade; and Jacob Garrison, staff. Congratu-lations to this month’s selections and keep up the good work. Next month’s trait is responsibility.

Sports are also going strong. We have already hosted sporting events for each of our fall sports. Volleyball, football, and cross country all have strong numbers and are performing very well. It is great to have so many involved students and supportive community members who show up to watch our student athletes.

Boundary County Middle School is also trying to get better at communicating with the community. Several teachers have created a Remind 101 service that parents can sign up for to receive communication from individual teachers. Our current website is updated regularly. We are working on creating a common calendar of events, in conjunction with other schools, the community can access online. We are also considering creating social media pages on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and others. BCMS welcomes community input and Mr. Miles is in the process of contacting parents to create a feedback group. If you are interested in being a part of this, please contact Mr. Miles.

Interested in volunteering at Boundary County Middle School? In order to be a regular volunteer, you must fill out form 5110F and have fingerprints on file at the district office. We are hosting a free fingerprinting service Thursday, Oct. 6 from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. in the BCMS library.

Our school is also gearing up for community service projects and class competitions. We are already under way with our shoe drive. We will soon be engaged on our annual Veteran’s Day Penny War competition.

We will also be hosting a Hope House event where free clothing/shoes will be accessible to the community.
