Bonners Ferry Herald names Star Silva managing editor

| October 6, 2016 1:00 AM

Star Silva, an award-winning reporter, was named managing editor of the Bonners Ferry Herald.

Silva started out at the Herald as a reporter in 1992, returned as news editor in 1999, and will now take over as managing editor.

In her new role, Silva will oversee weekly print and online news coverage, according to an announcement Monday by Publisher Jim McKiernan of the Bonner County Daily Bee.

Silva received an Associated Press, first–place award for her coverage of the 1992 Randy Weaver Siege at Ruby Ridge, and in 1999, she led the investigation and broke the story on Winston Blackmore and the Bountiful, British Columbia, the Mormon fundamentalist community actively practicing polygamy in the United States and Canada.

“The AP award was a team effort that included the Bonners Ferry Herald and Bonner County Daily Bee editorial staff,” Silva said. “I have my former editors, Bob Miller and David Keyes, to thank for the award.”

Since her last stint with the Herald, Silva has focused her attention on her bucket list. She spent time conducting humanitarian work: filming, photographing and documenting world missions. Silva spent time under UNHCR tents in the Kenyan bush, volunteered at an orphanage in Mexico and received honors for her humanitarian aid in India. Silva’s travels took her to the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo, Egypt, the Holy Land in Israel and the ancient city of Petra, Jordan.

Growing up in Montana and Bonners Ferry, Silva considers the Inland Northwest to be home and considers it an honor to once again serve the Boundary County community.

“You’re only as good as the stories you tell,” Silva said. “It’s the people of Boundary County that make this a great newspaper and I am very excited to tell their stories.”
