Lulu Stone victim of lucky accident

Miss Lulu Stone was the victim of what might be termed a lucky accident Monday. She was moving a rifle from behind a door when it was discharged in some manner, the bullet striking the barrel of another rifle, splintering it. Some of the pieces struck Miss Stone on her cheek and it was necessary to have the local physicians care for the wounds.
Notice to Hhunters in Katka District — On and after this date there shall be no hunting upon the ground enclosed by my fence as I have taken notice that some people haven’t sufficient brains to use a gun with safety to the general public. I have to take these precautions to protect the lives of my wife and baby. Any person or persons found hunting on my premises will be prosecuted. John V. Witt
Copeland — At the farmers’ meeting last Saturday it was decided to purchase an acre of ground from Zack Montgomery near the Bennett ranch for a stock yard. An effort will be made to induce the K.V. road to put in a spur at that point. If this can be done, the shopping of surplus stock from this place can be easily accomplished, and the ranchers will be greatly benefitted.
The Handmade Shoeshop desires to state that on account of the advance cost of leather and shoe findings, it will be impossible to allow any credit. The same retail price is maintained, but it must be cash now so that all bills can be discounted.

One of the busiest places in town this week is Allured’s Sport Shop, where Slim and Lucy Allured are selling licenses to hunters getting ready for this weekend’s opening of the duck, goose and pheasant seasons. During the past 20 years, the Allureds have issued more than 40,000 hunting licenses and deer and elk tags to local hunters to many coming from outside the area.
At the 4-H Achievement program for Boundary county local businessman Bill Irwin presented for the 10th time the sewing machine award of a new Pfaff machine to the top 4-H clothing member in the county. This year’s winner was Elaine Edmunds of the Happy Homemakers 4-H club at Eastport.
The Homecoming schedule will include a noise parade through town tonight at 7 p.m. A snake dance with then go through town to the high school where the Badgers will light a bonfire. The Homecoming queen will be crowned at a pep assembly Friday morning. The queen will be selected from the two senior candidates, Diane Zenier and Karen Hawks, with the football team making the selection. Princesses are Valerie Plum, junior class; Patty Guthrie, sophomore and Joanne Wombacher, freshman. The football game with Priest River will start at 2 p.m. Festivities will conclude with a dance at the high school, starting at 9:30 p.m.

National walk to school day — kicked off with a large number of parents, kids, teachers, friends and law enforcement walking from the downtown parking lot up the South Hill to Valley View Elementary School.
After less than a week, the FAA and NTSB have finished their preliminary investigation into the fatal helicopter crash that killed Precision Helicopter pilot Bob Davis on Sept. 25. They will continue the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, but early indications point to a loss of rotor control when the blades hit a tree, which caused the chopper to pitch and fall into the ravine. They have authorized the removal of the helicopter from the scene.
Sid and Eunice Neumeyer celebrated a half century of marriage Oct. 6 while Jim and Valdie Burkholder celebrated 59 years of wedded bliss and Marjorie T. and Lawrence Guthrie celebrated 55 years of marriage on Sept. 1, 2001.
Fourteen women’s college gold teams, ranging geographically from Nebraska to Hawaii, converged on Broomfield, Colo., for the two-day Heather Farr Memorial Tournament Oct. 8-9. Shooting a 76-73 on the par 72, 6,252-yard course, 1998 BFHS graduate Sarah Walter tied for seventh place in a field of 79 women.
