BONNERS FERRY —

The Badgers played the Lumberjacks at St. Maries Aug. 20. For the first time in program history, the St. Maries squad prevailed over Bonners Ferry with a final score of 3-0.

It was the season opener for both teams, with plenty of play ahead.

“We’ve played them usually at least three times a year, but it’s been a number of times they’ve beaten us,” said St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo, who began his 18th season at the helm with the win. “The flow of play was in their favor the entire game. It’s just nice to get a win. I think we’ve got a young team this year. A lot of these kids quite frankily, weren’t even born yet when we started playing them. I think this means more to me than these kids.”

The Lumberjacks held the Badgers without a shot on goal in the match.

First half — none. Second half — 1, SM, Stephen Davenport (penalty kick), 53:00. 2, SM, Matt Masterson (Davenport), 60:00. 3, SM, Masterson (unassisted), 79:00.

Shots on goal — BF 0, SM 16.

Saves — BF, Isaac Wilson, 8; SM, Zach Hills, 0.

Badger boys’ soccer played Lakeland Aug. 25. The Hawks subdued the Badgers with a final score of 3 to 1 at Thursday’s matchup in Rathdrum. Tuesday, Aug. 30, the BFHS team went head to head with the Timberlake Tigers of Spirit Lake. Although the final score was inconclusive at 0-all, the Badgers excelled in pasing and defense, according to a spectator.

The next soccer match for the Badgers is slated for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 in Bonners Ferry, when they will face challengers Stillwater Christian of Montana.
