Crews gain control of Ball creek forest fire

The Ball creek forest fire is reported under control. Eight men, under the charge of Forest Ranger N.O. Blackman, have been fighting the flames since last Monday.

The county commissioners have instructed Clerk Stanley to call for bids for the construction of a ferry at Leonia to be used on the Kootenai river. The bids will be opened October 9th.

A deal is being negotiated today which, if consummated will mean the erection of another two-story brick building on Main street this fall. It is also possible that two other brick blocks will be erected yet this fall.

A deal was closed yesterday whereby Fred McCall sold the stock and goodwill of the McCall Furniture Store to O.R. Stookey, of Winchester, Idaho. The new proprietor took possession yesterday. He is an experienced furniture dealer and plans to increase the amount of stock carried and add new lines. Mrs. Stookey and little baby will arrive Sunday to join Mr. Stookey.

With over $16,000 raised during the “Fill the Boot” drive Sept. 15, Boundary County fire fighters have setup an account at Panhandle Bank to send the money directly to the families of the missing and dead emergency personnel in New York City.

With only 17 firefighters on board, the Bonners Ferry City Council, approved a motion Tuesday night for the fire department to begin advertising for additional applicants to bring the number of personnel up to its normal capacity of 21. The council also approved a motion authorizing the fire department to purchase $3,051 worth of new equipment and to help fund Second Chance Animal Adoption (SCCA) upgrade the existing city pound to accommodate the growing number of dogs and cats in the area. SCCA has adopted out over 470 dogs in the past two years.

After an incident involving prescription drugs at Bonners Ferry High School on Sept. 6, five students were suspended for buying and selling a controlled substance. According to Bonners Ferry Deputy Police Chief Rick Alonzo, many parents and kids don’t realize that even a prescription pain killer in their name is still considered a controlled substance. Alonzo submitted the file to the Boundary County Prosecutor Brett Benson for review. Benson will determine fit he stude4tns should be formally charged or face a Youth Accountability Board.

Just when it looked as though the Badgers might pull off a stunning come-from-behind victory, Lethbridge shocked Bonners Ferry when Jordan Sailer rumbled for a 42-yard touchdown with a little over four minutes to go, giving the Rams a 27-24 win Sept. 14.

A resolution designating Friday, sept. 28 as an official day of remembrance for Robert “Bobby” Krause throughout Boundary County was adopted Monday by the Boundary County Commissioners. Krause, who was 72 passed away at his Copeland home Sept. 14, a loss that both stunned and saddened the community. Stating in part that he epitomized the character, generosity and spirit of the people, that made Boundary County what it is today, the commissioner’s resolution also proclaimed Bobby was a keeper of a unique part of the county’s history and was considered a treasure to its citizens.
