Bonners Ferry football suffered their fifth-straight loss at home Friday, Sept. 23, as the Pullman Greyhounds blew past the Badgers on their way to a 46-0 shutout on a windy and rainy homecoming.

“The two worst words in sports,” said Boundary County School District Superintendent Gary Pflueger at the game. “Rebuilding year.”

Rebuilding year or not, the young Badgers team has faced some tough non-league opponents this year, giving up more than 40 points in each of their five losses and scoring less than 40 points in all five games combined. Overtopped, outweighed and outnumbered by the visitors from Pullman and coming off a punishing grinder of a game against the Sandpoint Bulldogs, many Badgers (on the field and in the stands) may have found it hard to keep their hearts in the game.

The night is always darkest before dawn, and the Badgers face another hard game this Friday as they head to St. Maries to take on the undefeated Lumberjacks. The Jacks have already taken down all three of the other Intermountain league schools by healthy margins, but this may actually be good news for the Badgers. Timberlake currently holds the same record as Bonners Ferry, and Kellogg and Priest River can only claim a single win apiece.

With their final three games all league play, Oct. 7 at Timberlake, Oct. 14 at Kellogg and Oct 21 a final home game vs Priest River, the Badgers still have a shot of turning around their season and making the state playoffs.
