100 Year
The sheriff’s office was notified Wednesday of the disappearance of fourteen-year-old Paul Ferbrache. It was learned that the boy had been at Meadow Creek but at that point all tract of him has been lost.
An alien by the name of Leonard Noseworthy was taken in charge last Wednesday by U.S. immigration Officer O.S. Davis, for deportation. The prisoner was deported March 23 after having been held here for 66 days. He was taken to Fernie and evidently lost no time in trying to get back in the United States. Mr. Davis found Noseworthy in a boxcar on the Great Northern. The man was beating his way to Spokane.
George Marvin’s 60-horsepower gasoline launch arrived last Tuesday from Seattle and the initial trip was made Thursday. The boat is 28 feet long and will carry 12 passengers. Before starting the regular schedule Mr. Marvin will complete a contract for the towing of a million feet of logs from Ball creek to the Canadian line on the Kootenai river.
S.D. Taylor of Boise arrived here Saturday to spend a few days looking after business interests and his holdings of town property. Mr. Taylor was owner of the Bonners Ferry Herald for over 20 years, having started the paper in 1891.
Deputy Sheriff McMahon made the haul of ten gunny sacks full of whiskey Sunday night in the great Northern freight yards. The whiskey was found in an empty freight car.

Joseph (Joe) Welch, 106-year-old longtime Boundary county resident, passed away at the Community nursing home Saturday, April 15. He was born July 15, 1860, the year before the Civil War began, near Boston, MA. He settled in Boundary county about 1917, continuing his woods and railroad work. In 1952 he moved to Moyie Springs. He did his own cooking and housework until shortly after his 105th birthday.
The JayCee’s are offering a reward for the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for “painting” the numerous signs in and around the Bonners Ferry area. Always gawdy signs, with no apparent artistry, and sometimes extremely lewd sayings attached have prompted the action.
Three juveniles appeared before Probate Judge Ralph Mills, charged with being public nuisances and painting on public and private property without permission. Court action was withheld pending investigation.
Joe Jaeger, Jr., 52 of Coeur d’Alene, owner of Don’s Café in Bonners Ferry, was killed along with two other persons Monday when a twin-engine plane, piloted by Jaeger, crashed in rugged country near Oxbow, Ore. while on a flight from Boise to Coeur d’Alene. A prominent restaurateur, Jaeger also operated North Shore Motor Hotel in Coeur d’Alene and a restaurant in Ritzville, Wash. He purchased Don’s café from Mrs. Leona Beatty in January, 1966.

Whether the one year $527,000 M&O levy is passed by voters on April 23, Boundary County School District #101 announced Tuesday night a recommendation to approve a $220,000 budget cut. Approximately 86 percent of the annual school district budget pays salaries for teachers and district staff. “Currently we are looking at a staff reduction as part of this budget cut,” explained Don Bartling school superintendent. “We have a couple of teachers leaving at the end of the school year and because we do not plan to replace them, we will recover $110,000 towards this budget cut through attrition.”
Practicing ice rescue and hypothermia training in Porthill, The Hall Mt Volunteer Fire Department is the only volunteer fire agency north of Hayden with ice rescue training equipped with an ice rescue sled. With a station in Yaak, B.C., it’s also the only international fire district. Ice conditions permitting, volunteers train every spring by learning to slide on ice and float on water.
Boundary County will join thousands of schools, libraries and community groups nation-wide in an effort to encourage millions of Americans to turn off their TV sets for seven days and turn on life. Children in the United States watch almost three house off television each day. Over the course of a year, children will spend more time watching television (1,023 hours) than they will have spent in school (900 hours).
The Boundary economic Development Committee (EDC) began working on implementation of a city revitalization project in January. The first project the committee will undertake is an effort for improving downtown infrastructure.
