Lady Badgers Track on a three-meet win streak
Bonners Ferry High School’s Lady Badgers post wins at the Kellogg Invitational, InterMountain League Quad, and Priest River Invitational.
The Lady Badgers showed their versatility at the Kellogg Booster Invite on Saturday, April 15, 2017, taking the first place trophy with a score of 148, followed by Coeur d’Alene Charter at 89, Lake City at 81.5, St. Maries at 74.5, and more. Over ten schools fielded teams at the invitational.
Despite a lack of sprinters, the Lady Badgers made up points across events. Haley Wenk and Victoria Rae went first and sixth respectively in the 1 KG discus. Rae won the 4 KG shot and Wenk took second. Badger relays scored in the 4x200M and sprint medley, and the 4X400M took first. Emmi Mullershon was third in the high jump and second in the triple jump. Miranda Wenk tied for fourth in high jump and took first in the triple. Jill Alexander tied for fourth in the pole vault, while Serenity Fahey was sixth in the 300M hurdles. Abigail Gorton took gold in the 3200M with a 12:28 and second in the 1600M race. Jordan Young brought in big points for the Badgers with wins at both the 800M and 1600M distance events. Nicole Donn was fourth in the 800 and 1600. Senior captain Natasha Webster was fourth in the 400M dash.
At the IML Quad at Priest River on Thursday evening, April 20, the Lady Badgers kept the wins coming, despite closer battles with rivals Kellogg and Priest River in the smaller quad meet structure. Despite missing some their strongest point earners, the Badgers employed the “Team” ethic that the coaching staff has been emphasizing. Lauren Stidham shifted to the 4X400M relay to replace the injured Webster, and in the final event of the evening, the Badgers pulled ahead of Kellogg and Priest River to pull off the Quad meet win.
The win places the Badgers second in the InterMountain League, behind Timberlake and ahead of Priest River, Kellogg, and Coeur d’Alene Charter.
Back at Priest River Lamanna High School on Saturday, April 22, the Lady Badgers again took first, besting thirteen small schools teams from around the region. The top five team scores are as follows: Bonners Ferry 123.5, Cusick 74, Liberty (Spangle) 65, Newport 56.5, and Deer Park 49.
Once again, the Lady Badgers earned points across a gamut--M. Wenk third in the triple jump, Alexander third in the pole vault, second in the 4X400M and sprint medley, fourth in the 4X200M, etc.
In the throws and distance events points piled up. The 1-2 of Rae and H. Wenk in the shot and discus, Young’s wins in the 1600M and 800M, and Gorton’s first place in the 3200M and third in the 1600M all helped secure the Badger victory.
The day’s and week’s successes were truly the results of team effort.
“We are working on rebuilding a tradition, a culture,” said Head Coach Travis Hinthorn. “We’re emphasizing team. It has been encouraging to see athletes out supporting each other during events, helping out at the middle school meet, and working in practices. Let’s keep it up.”
