BONNERS FERRY — The air was heavy with heat and wildfire smoke as the Cross Country teams assembled to test their skill in the race between the schools in the panhandle of Idaho.

Bonners Ferry High School Cross Country team had its meet on Saturday, Aug. 26. The school teams from Priest River Lamanna, Kellogg, Coeur d’Alene Charter, and Kootenai, met at the Off Road Vehicle (ORV) park in Naples, Idaho to compete in a five kilometer race between both girl’s and boy’s teams.

The scores work similar to golf, the lower the team score, the higher the rank. The official school winners were Priest River Lamanna as No. 1 for the boys team with 15, and for the girl’s team, Bonners Ferry took No. 1 with 19, and Priest River Lamanna with 36.

Promising runner, Jordan Young finished with the time of 21:56 with Abigail Gorton on her heels with the finishing time of 22:26 for the girls team.

The Bonners Ferry Cross Country boys team finished with Sam Gorton in third with the finishing time of 19:58, a mere minute and a half shy of the first place winner, Cameron Parkes, who led the field with a finishing score of 18:30 for the competition.

With the detrimental weather, the contenders of all the cross country teams pushed through the conditions Mother Nature threw at them, and competed with practice, skill, and heart in order to accomplish their goals to come out at the top of the charts for one of the first of many competitions for the season.
