BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry girls basketball team built a 16-2 lead to start its Dec. 22 game thanks to some cold shooting by the Lakeland Hawks, and that 14-point margin was the same as the final score, a 46-32 home win.
In between, the Badgers led 18-8 at halftime and got the lead back up to 15 points in the third quarter. But the Hawks warmed up in the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 36-30 with 4:30 left in the game. The Badgers ended the game on a 10-2 run.
“It was not our prettiest game, but I think Lakeland had a lot to do with that,” said coach Travis Hinthorn. “They are quick and scrappy. We struggled defensively in the third getting out on their shooters, but did a good job controlling the ball and taking time off at the end. The last couple minutes were the best we looked the whole game.”
Miranda Wenk had a dominating performance for the Badgers, scoring 20 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Wenk also had 4 steals, 3 assists and a blocked shot.
“Miranda just continues to improve and seems to consistently gives us double digits in points and rebounds every game,” said Hinthorn.
Kassy Skeen continued to be a steady contributor, grabbing 14 rebounds and scoring 9 points.
“We are in a good place where we have a number of players we can count on to contribute and don’t just rely on one or two players to do everything,” said Hinthorn.
Alaina Pruitt and Melody Loutzenhiser each scored 10 points for Lakeland (2-7)
The Lady Badgers now have a 7-1 record and will have a busy holiday break. They will be at the West Valley tournament Dec. 27 and 28, where they will play the host West Valley Eagles and Colville.
On Jan. 3 the Badgers will travel to Eureka and then to Wallace on Jan. 5 before both the boys and girls teams host Priest River to begin Intermountain League play on Saturday, Jan. 6.
This will also be ‘Camp Shirt Day.’ Any student who participated in the 2017 Badger Basketball Camp, and who wears their camp shirt, will get free entry into the game. The Badgers hope to have a full gym as they welcome the first home and league game of 2018.
