Watermelon Days

| February 23, 2017 12:00 AM

Wouldn’t a bit of sunshine and watermelon be good just about now? Well, here is a piece of melon, big enough to feed the town! Can you identify who made the float? Who the lovely ladies are? What event this was for? If you have an answer, please email doyouremember@meadowcrk.com. If you would like to stay anonymous, just let us know.

Don Jordan identified the machine in last week’s picture as a steam tractor. They had steel wheels. He says the one shown was quite large. Grace Schuon Ledit identified Bob Meeker’s Machine Shop that the tractor sat by. The business was in the area that is currently the parking lot behind the museum. If you would like to learn more about Meeker’s, the museum has a wonderful display to teach you more. Come on down for a visit and plan to stay awhile.

Russ Roscoe, Barb Shiell and Jim Burkholder also recognized the White family and the results of their deer hunt, in the picture that we shared with you several weeks ago. Jim tells us this is one of the best pictures he has seen of his grandfather, Blaine White Sr., and that it was taken in the early 1940’s at the homestead east of Moyie.

Your Boundary County Historical Society and Museum, 7229 Main, Bonners Ferry, Idaho sponsors this column. Flipping through the old Do You Remember columns from 2011, we came across a photo of the Mountain View Hotel. In that column, it was noted that Lillian Smith, from Minnesota, remembered that her mother was the last owner. We also read that Lillian had some items; a lamp, a desk and a registry, from the hotel. The museum would be interested in obtaining copies of registry. Lillian if you read this, or if you know Lillian Smith, please contact the museum. Thank you.
