Badgers 1-1 in holiday games

The Bonners Ferry varsity girls basketball team went one and one during the holiday break.
They travelled to the Spokane Valley on Dec. 28 to compete in the Eagle Holiday classic, where they took on the Lancers from Liberty High and lost 34-61.
The Badgers then played an exciting game against Kellogg on Tuesday, Jan. 3 and pulled out a win in overtime (47-46).
On Dec. 28, the undefeated (10-0) Liberty team rolled right over the Badgers, with two of their starters, Christine Denney and Maisie Burnham, putting up 22 points apiece.
Head coach Rich Feickert says, “Liberty had a good team, they were big (tall)...we were just beaten inside.”
According to Feickert, the Badgers lost their starting center, Miranda Wenk, during the first quarter due to an ankle injury. If that wasn’t enough, another crucial player, Kassy Skeen, had to sit out part of the game because of a head injury.
Skeen was still able to lead Bonners Ferry in scoring, however, with 13 points. Kadi Bateman and Emmi Mullerschon each had eight points in the game.
The game on Jan. 3 was more hotly contested, with the score changing hands throughout the four quarters.
Injuries still plagued the Badgers, with their starting center, Wenk, benched from the beginning and their backup center, Jerzie Pluid, going out with a dislocated shoulder in the first half. This didn’t phase the rest of the players on the Bonners Ferry team, who were able to step up and get the job done regardless.
“I truly couldn’t be more proud of their effort,” Coach Feickert says.
This overtime win brings the team’s overall record to 4-4. Their first matchup of the New Year is with Genesis Prep at home. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
