100 Year

C.A. Forney, fireman on Passenger train No. 2, Great Northern Railway, was the victim of a peculiar accident last Tuesday Morning. While the train was passing through the tunnel between Naples and Moravia, Forney was struck on the head by some hard substance, (he thinks it might have been a large icicle) which rendered him unconscious. Forney was taken to the Bonners Ferry hospital and an examination by Drs. Fry and Faucett showed that he had sustained a slight fracture of the skull.

The Frank Herzig general merchandise store at Naples was totally destroyed by fire yesterday morning. No particulars of the fire have reached this city owing to the fact that all telephone connections were destroyed. It is known that the store was burned to the ground and that a $5,000 stock of general merchandise was burned, as well as the contents of Mr. Herzig’s housekeeping apartment. It is also understood that a greater part of the postoffice records were destroyed. The loss is partially covered by insurance.

Bonners Ferry Badger basketball fans will see the team all decked out in classy new blazers at Friday night’s game here against the Wallace Miners, thanks to 475 hours of work by a group of interested mothers.

Atty. Peter B. Wilson announced this week that Atty. Neil O. Walter has joined him in formation of a partnership for the practice of law, with the law firm to be known as Wilson and Walter.

Seen and Heard...Clem Mostek doing TV work on Black mountain with Ray Sims and complaining about not getting radio contact with his partner – until discovering that he was holding the “mike” to his ear instead of his mouth……

Did you know that present-day Leonia, located east of Bonners Ferry at the Montana border, was once a thriving railroad town that prospered during the days of the Yahk mining discoveries in the late 1890’s? Or did you know that half of Leonia was once in Idaho and the other half in Montana?

Police Chief Gene Maggi today reminded all vehicle owners that their cooperation will be needed in keeping streets clear for snow removal work. Vehicles should not be left parked on streets in residential districts for extended periods of time. He does not want to be pressed into sending wreckers out to remove vehicles that are in the way.

Whoever was responsible for this act made quite a statement when he or she destroyed an American flag. North Idaho Energy Logs hung the flag and placed a light above it after the Sept. 11 attacks, but last month someone broke the light and stole the flag after slicing it in half.

The first annual snowman building contest was held Sunday, Dec. 23 at the home of Evelyn Rae. Participation was modest with four entries that were judged by Tim and Jenny Dougherty. Everyone, including the judges, received a prize. Entrants were presented with snowman trophies for the serious and humorous creativity.

Don and Edith Stolley of Moyie Springs are the recipients of the 2001 Foster Parent Recognition Award for Boundary County. The award was given by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare in appreciation of the Stolley’s commitment and dedication to children and youth. Don and Edith have been foster parents to over 70 children since they were licensed in 1994.

Two people were injured Friday when a tractor-trailer loaded with wood chips collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle on U.S. Highway 2 near the Idaho/Montana border. Idaho state Police say Robert L. Bennett, Jr., a 57 year old Kalispell, Mont. resident, was westbound in a Ford Explorer when he crossed the center line and collided heard-on into a 1992 Freightliner driven by Darwin K. Berosik, 35, of Columbia Falls. Both were injured in the accident and taken to Boundary Community Hospital. It was not immediately clear if either driver was wearing a seatbelt, ISP said.
