100 Year

The members of the county board of commissioners will meet tonight with the town board of trustees for the purpose of arriving at some agreement whereby the county and the town will join in providing a pest house for the use of such contagious cases as is necessary for the public safety.

County Treasurer James reports that up to last Saturday evening this office had collected $68,392.59 in taxes due the first of the year. Mr. James states there are more delinquencies this time than usual, but believes it is due to misunderstanding when the sewer assessments should be paid.

Fish were served each Friday for dinner at the home of five-year-old Flossie, and during a two weeks’ sojourn in the country she had missed them. “Grandma, don’t you have any Fridays out here?” Of course we do, dear,” replied the old lady. “But why do you ask?” “’Cause,” rejoined Flossie, “I haven’t smelled a Friday since I’ve been here.”

The Kalispell high school basketball team, which defeated the local boys Friday evening, were in turn defeated by the North Central high school team at Spokane on Thursday by a score of 34 to 8.

The recent warm spell and thaw cleared the snow from the ice on Mirror lake and the young folks are again enjoying skating, reporting the ice to be in very good condition.

50 Year

H.M. Buroker, city clerk and manager of the city water and light department, tendered his resignation at the regular meeting of the city council Tuesday evening. Buroker has served the city in some capacity for more than 40 years. He first came here in 1924 and was employed as electrician at the Continental mine near Porthill. A year later he went to work for the village of Bonners Ferry as a lineman.

Friday, Jan. 13th wasn’t unlucky for Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Heinemann, who farm near Copeland, as it was on that day that the newest addition to their family made his appearance in the person of Ronald Scott Heinemann. He weighed in at just under seven pounds, six ounces, and was 19 inches long.

At the Tuesday meeting of the city council, Bonners Ferry officials established an ordinance providing for salaries for the mayor and city councilmen. The mayor will receive $37.50 and council will be paid $25.00 for each regular meeting they attend.

The Bonners Ferry city council Tuesday enacted an ordinance providing for installation of a city sewage lagoon at an estimated cost not to exceed $300,000.00. The ordinance also provides for a special bond election seeking voter approval of issuance of municipal sewer revenue bonds totaling a maximum of $220.00.00, which would pay the major portion of the project’s cost.

A three-hour fire caused when the door of a woodstove was left ajar tore through the home of Bill Blume on Camas St. near the hospital Tuesday night. It took 16 city firefighters along with the Paradise Valley Volunteer Fire Department to finally contain the blaze. No one was injured in the blaze, but fire officials said the house was a total loss.

Boundary County voters will go to the polls Feb. 5 in an attempt to pass an $11.9 million plant facilities levy that would build a new high school and fix several ailing schools.

A snowmobile accident in the Roman Nose area late Monday sent two people to Boundary Community Hospital with head and leg injuries. According to Boundary County Sheriff’s deputies, a snowmobile with two riders that was towing a disable snowmobile struck a third snowmobile which was coming down a trail.

A routine vehicle inspection at the Canadian/U.S. border at Eastport resulted in the arrest of two adults for drug trafficking across international borders. Ronald Kitts, 50 of Canada and Patricia Bischoff, 38, a resident of California, were also charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.
