Poet Robert Burns remembered at the Pearl

The Pearl Theater recently brought a taste of the Highlands to Bonners Ferry as they celebrated the National Poet of Scotland with their second annual Burns Night, the first of their 2017 season line-up.

The evening began with special treats from Pearl Café: Scotch ale, Shepherd’s Pie, and Bubbles ‘n Squeaks, topped off with Red and Green cake and pastries, prepared especially for the occasion by Nora. All reports indicated that the audience didn’t miss haggis, another entrée of a traditional Burns Supper.

Free Whiskey Trio entertained the audience with beautiful vocal harmonies, string instruments and drums. The band, most noted for their six-piece Irish music at O’ Doherty’s in Spokane, interspersed Scottish jigs and love songs with the poetry of Robert Burns. While the band most often includes three other musicians, the audience wouldn’t have guessed it as they tapped their toes to the music of Merrilee Schultz on fiddle, Autumn Mackert on whistle and drum, and Maria Tart-Van Blaricum on bass and guitar. The band partied into the evening, playing a long set of pub fare and traditional melodies for the crowd.
