100 Year

Last Thursday a fire alarm was turned in from the M.J. Macnamara home in the east part of town, but upon the arrival of the fire fighters its was found that the trouble was due to a chimney burning out no damage resulting.

We have just issued new telephone directories, and if any patrons have not secured one, please call up central and notify us. On and after February 1st, all calls must be by number. – Interstate Utilities Co.

Two Bonners Ferry young ladies, Miss Verna Bruce and Miss Goldie Harding, have been taking courses in nursing in St. Luke’s hospital in Spokane, which was totally destroyed by fire Sunday. All patients and occupants of the hospital were removed without harm. Word has not been received as yet for the young ladies and it is not known whether they will return home pending the building of a new hospital or whether their services will be required in the city.

The telephone line that has been under construction since November 15, between Moyie Springs and Lenia is now completed and in operation. The new system comprises 16 miles of main line and 4 ½ miles of branch lines and was built cooperatively by the forest service and the settlers. By the construction of this line telephone communication is now possible from Libby and Troy, Mont., through Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint to Spokane.

S. Leibrecht, one of the prominent ranches of the Leonia district was a business visitor in the city Saturday. Mr. Leibrecht is selling hay in the city and is getting $18 a ton for a fair grade.

50 Year

Park tavern located two miles north of Naples on old Highway 2-95, was destroyed by fire last Saturday afternoon in a blaze that apparently started in the attic and quickly swept through the building after breaking through the ceiling of the ground level quarters. The building was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Mohr.

A Boundary county budget of $900,573.00 is proposed for the currently fiscal year, an increase of $76,698.17 over the 1966 budget of $823,874.83. The budget for 1965 was $687,022.48, so this year’s increase is well below that of last year.

Marco Spade, Sandpoint, appeared before Boundary county Probate Judge Ralph Mills Jan. 17th and had his Idaho hunting and fishing licenses suspended for six months on a charge of exceeding the bag limit on bear.

The Bonners Ferry high school junior varsity basketball team ran their season record to 10-2 last weekend with a pair of victories.

They defeated Lakeland by a decisive 76-41 score. Larry Owsley was high man with 12 points, Tom Foust and Kim Jenkins each scored 10. Saturday night, they took their tenth win with a whooping 80-56 decision over Eureka, Mont.

Tom Foust was top scorer with 19 points, followed by Darrel Kerby with 17, Larry Owsley with 15, and Lynn Beatty 13.

15 Year

Several hundred hits of the hallucinogenic drug ecstasy and an unspecified amount of methamphetamine was seized at the U.S./Canadian border in Eastport January 17. Scott Alan Medeiros, 18, Shawn Paul Medeiros, 22 and Christina Joyce Soltau, 20, were charged with possession of a controlled substance and are being held on a $500,000 bond each.

PG&E National energy Group contributed $15,000 to the Boundary County revitalization project Tuesday in an effort to help the city and county with the matching funds requirement for the eco-development grant.

Trailing by as many as 11 points twice in the second half, the Bonner Ferry Badgers (11-3, 4-0) sank 16 of 17 free throws as they roared back to edge Priest River 64-63 in over-time Jan. 15 and remain unbeaten in the IML.

A former Boundary County school trustee and spokesman for an organization opposed to the $11.9 school facilities plant levy that would build a new 85,000 square foot high school said the group will try to defeat it by educating the public with flyers and advertisements before voters head to the polls Feb. 5.
