Wild Horse Trail DAR lists essay contest winners

| July 13, 2017 1:00 AM

Each year, Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors an American History essay contest for grades 5 through 8. A different essay topic is selected each year.

The topic for 2016-2017 was the National Park Service’s 100th Birthday. The students were to pretend they were writing a journal while visiting one of the 58 national parks. They were to identify its location and discuss why and when it was established as a national park and express what makes this park one of our national treasures.

The essays were scored on completeness of the title page, historical accuracy, adherence to the subject, organization of the material, originality, interest, spelling and punctuation, grammar and their bibliography.

Wild Horse Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is pleased to announce the 2016-17 American History Essay Contest winners. They are: Emmerson Fleck, fifth grade at Pend Oreille Valley Adventist School, for Haleakala National Park; Morgan Moon, sixth grade at Boundary County Middle School, for Yellowstone National Park; Makien Wolcott, seventh grade at Pend Oreille Valley Adventist School, for Zion National Park; and Madalyn Nichols, eighth grade at Pend Oreille Valley Adventist School for Yellowstone National Park.

Each winner was presented with a certificate from the local Wild Horse Trail Chapter along with a medal. All entrants were presented with certificates for their hard work.
