“The construction of the dike on the banks of the Kootenai river is progressing nicely under the supervision of Joe Meddock,” said J.R. Meeker, of the street and alley committee of the town board of trustees, yesterday. Last week the workmen encountered some difficulty in getting down dirt fast enough for the wagons, owning to frost in the ground. At the present time some one third more than was hauled per day the first week.
A band of 5000 sheep were driven through town yesterday on their way to Meadow Creek where they will graze this summer on government land. The sheep were shipped by rail from Pasco, Wash., to Sandpoint. Herders in charge of the sheep stated that the sheep were worth $12.50 each and the lambs $8.50.

Deputy Sheriff P.H. Callahan captured two bootleggers near Leonia early this morning. The men gave their names as Charles Wilson and William Barton. They had a case of whiskey each wrapped in their blankets. The men ill be given preliminary hearings tomorrow. Deputy Sheriff McMahon was certain that Wilson had not given his right name as he found among his effects a number of papers which belonged to E.M. Trigg. McMahon and Janitor Reid framed up a fake telegram and called for E.M. Trigg. Wilson immediately stepped up to get the telegram. He had acted too hastily and had to admit that Trigg was his true name.

Bargain Giant IGA Food Store, located on Bonner Ferry’s Southside was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning, with the loss estimated in excess of $100,000 by owners Dan Klick and Jim Farber. Fire Chief Wes Deist said the fire had been smoldering for some time and may have been touched off by a faulty electrical circuit in an ice machine, but he added that further investigation will be necessary to definitely determine the cause.
The office of Dr. Frank Coram was broken into last week and an unreported sum of money and drugs taken as desks and cabinets were forced open. A window in the rear of the building was broken to gain entry. The sheriff’s office said fingerprints were found at the place of entry and they are being checked by authorities.
The river rose to its highest level of the spring Monday, when it went to the unofficial mark of about 32.9. Dikes are being patrolled around-the-clock and the corps flood headquarters, located in the National guard Armory, is also operating on a 24-hour basis.
One hundred fifty controlled hunt permits for Idaho’s first wild mountain turkey hunt in history will be issued to lucky winners at a public drawing scheduled in Boise at 9 a.m. July 21, it was announced today by the state Fish and Game department.

A tractor trailer rollover accident about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday near Mt. Hall school 16 miles north of Bonners Ferry injured the driver and killed and injured many of the pigs he was hauling. The 42-year-old driver, Francois Fortine, of Alberta Canada was transported to Boundary Community Hospital. According to official reports, Fortine lost control of the truck when he locked his brakes on a tight corner on U.S. Highway 95 and landed upside down about 100 feet down the embankment. The Boundary County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from local farmers to house the live pigs and asked for county help to remove the dead.
That’s no mackerel that Lee Harris pulled out of Dawson Lake 20 minutes after she dropped her line last Friday morning. It’s a 43 ½” tiger muskie, weighing well of 20 lbs. she caught with a “secret” lure. Last month Mike Skittles hauled in a 45”, 22 lb. tiger muskie as well.
A tort claim for an unspecified amount has been filed against both the City of Bonners Ferry and Boundary County by three Arizona residents stemming from damages resulting from what they allege was an unlawful arrest in mid-January. The suit by Christina Soltau, Shawn and Scott Medeiros of Phoenix, Ariz. claims “negligent and wanton acts” by deputies from the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the City of Bonners ferry Police Department during an arrest at the U.S./Canadian border in Eastport Jan. 17. The tort claim alleges damages including both injury to property and deprivation of personal liberty while the three were held in custody for 14 days.
A prime chunk of real estate on a pristine 2,600-acre ranch in northern Boundary County for now will remain just that-at least until county commissioners feel they could somehow approve a large wetlands reserve program in the Kootenai Valley.
