Last week Katherine Anderson shared a picture of the Louis Rath home from about 1902. This cabin was used as a dwelling until at least the summer of 2010.

Louis John William Rath was born Dec. 1, 1873 in Mitchell, Illinois. He was the son of Conrad and Mary Rath. He grew up and received his education there. In 1897, he would marry Mammie Kraft. Two years later Mammie passed away giving birth to their son who also did not survive. In 1900 Louis moved to Porthill and homesteaded until 1925 when he traded his home to Mr. and Mrs. Gust Anderson. He then lived with his family in the area where he worked in the woods and farmed until 1940. He then retired and moved into Bonners Ferry. He would live in town until he passed on July 15, 1966. He is buried at the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Porthill.
