SOS: Save our sturgeon

After the winter rains had subsided our pond returned to normal size, the grass grew rapidly creating a lush green pasture and the horses were content. There was truly peace in the valley.

A few mornings later, I looked outside and lo and behold 40 percent of our pasture was under water! What natural disaster had caused this calamity? Unlike the 200 year flood from four years ago (with 3 feet of water in our driveway) and the washing out of my driveway a few weeks ago. I soon learned that the sturgeon were unhappy, so to make their sex life more satisfying, the dam people at Libby Dam decided to flood my pasture again. Note that as I paddled my kayak throughout my pasture I did not see even one sturgeon, endangered mosquito, nor even a minnow. I did see several green frogs; however, I would guess that their appearance had nothing to do with this man-made disaster.

I understand that in a week my pasture will start draining as the sturgeon take a much needed break from their strenuous activities, but my pasture will then turn into a mud bog, then a week or two later the sturgeon will be at it again.

Don’t get me wrong. I admire the sturgeon in their struggle for survival and I wish them a happy life. Please don’t beat me up for my satire.
