Abe Spence Loewen
Funeral service for Abe Spence Loewen will be held Sunday, March 5, at Southern Star Mennonite Church in Geiger, AL at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Souls Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Church on Saturday from 6:30 until 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Oakwood Manor, 218 Oakwood Drive, Brooksville, MS 39739. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon, MS is entrusted with arrangements.
Abe Spence Loewen was born July 23, 1921, in Littlefield, Texas to David G. and Catherine Spence Loewen. He peacefully went to his reward on March 2, 2017, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Columbus, Mississippi, reaching the age of 95 years.
He expressed a deep appreciation for what Jesus had done for him.
His growing up years were spent in the Winton, Calif., area.
He had good memories of his time of 1-W service in several different locations in California.
On July 31, 1949, he was married to Bernettie Louise Friesen. They established their home near Winton, Calif.
They raised their family in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where he was a millwright at Bonners Ferry Lumber Co.
Family vacations were important to him.
He said, “We may not have much, but we travel as a family.”
He loved nature, fishing, hunting, and camping.
He had many friends, a generous heart, and a captivating way of sharing stories of the past. In March 1974, they moved to Geiger, Ala,, helping to establish the Geiger congregation.
He enjoyed farming together with his son, Ken.
After the auto accident he had in 1983 he quit farming and took various part time jobs. When he was 86, after promising his life-long friend Pete Giesbrecht that he would meet him in Heaven, he re-consecrated his life to God. In 2015 they moved to Oakwood Manor, Brooksville, Miss.
He appreciated the spiritual atmosphere, the fellowship, and excellent care he received there.
He is loved and missed by his wife of nearly 68 years, Bernettie; Children, Ken and Della, Anne and Galen Dirks; Gainesville, AL; Patricia and Roger Wedel, Mayfield, KY; Louise and James Pendergrass, Fayette, AL; 11 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. 2 brothers, Jesse, Dennard, AR; Jim and Rose, Center CO, and Helen Diller, Walnut Hill, FL.
Preceding him in death are his parents, two infant children, one great-grandchild and two brothers and a brother-in-law.
