Lucille Lucy Falk Miller
Lucille Jean (Falk) Miller, age 94, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, March 3, 2017, in Sandpoint, Idaho, where she moved from Minneapolis, Minn., four years ago to be near her eldest daughter.
Born August 2, 1922, to Jennie (Morse) and Christian A. Falk in Huffton, S.D., she was the oldest of two daughters. At the age of 14, Lucille and her family moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where she attended South High School, graduating at the tender age of 16. She attended Augsburg College for a year, then transferred to the University of Minnesota where she graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in 1943. She later received her master’s degree from the U of M in social work.
Lucille had a much-admired career in social work, her life’s passion, spending her early career as a caseworker with Hennepin County Welfare Board/Hennepin County Court Services. She joined the Minneapolis Public Schools as a social worker in 1953, where she spent the next 29 years working at many of the city’s high school and junior high schools. At the same time, she worked part-time with the American Red Cross as a night caseworker helping service personnel return home when faced with family emergencies. She retired from the school system in June 1982 and from the Red Cross a year later, after 30 years of service.
Lucille was dedicated to dozens of community and church organizations. “Lucy” will always be remembered for her love to dance, her joy to dress in vibrant colors and her commitment to help others in need. She loved to write poetry and in 2011 she realized a lifelong dream, when her book ‘Poems By Lucy’ was published (Amazon.com).
Her willingness to laugh and bring joy to others will be sorely missed.
Lucille was preceded in death by her loving husband, Don, and her dear sister Lois. She is survived by daughter Loi Eberle (Bob Bissett) of Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho; daughter Lisa Simer, (Karl) of Fridley, Minn.,; son Davin Miller (Elizabeth Whitchurch) of Hudson, Wis.,; five grandchildren who live from coast-to-coast: Will, Emily, Erin, Victoria and Jenna; and two great-grandchildren in Vermont.
A memorial service at the Lake of the Isles Church in Minneapolis and private interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery are planned for Monday, April 17 in Minneapolis, Minn.
