'Bullets and Belles' Takes Aim at The Pearl

| March 24, 2017 5:57 PM

Bullets and Belles hits the stage Saturday, March 25th at The Pearl Theater.

The group hails from the Portland area by way of Salt Lake City. Their premier album “Be Glad” launched them into the professional music scene. Since 2011, they have incorporated a traditional DooWop feel with their own retro style.

Bullets and Belles turns Doo-Wop on its head, calling their arrangements “Neo Doo-Wop Folk.” This style seamlessly blends acoustic blues and doo-wop with a trace of country-folk in a three-part vocal harmony.

A little music review may help to understand the genre: DooWop was the hottest music movement of the 40’s through the sixties, hitting its peak around 1961. Hit bands included The Ink Spots, Dion and the Belmonts, The Mills Brothers, The Platters, The Monotones, and The Moonglows. Though these band names may elude some of us, the music remains at the forefront of our memories . . . songs like “Earth Angel,” “Only You,” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”.

Think of these harmonies, combined with more contemporary styles, like Amy Winehouse, Simon & Garfunkel, and Taj Mahal. Bullets and Belles will bring them to The Pearl stage. Those who review Bullets and Belles performances alternately describe them as poetic and inspirational, while at the same time, whistling and toe tapping.

James Orme of SLUG Magazine says, “It’s only a matter of time before this band finds a sizeable degree of success, and I say that with confidence because after every listen, I only want more.” P
